Website Accessibility Services

Why Website Accessibiilty is Important

In recent years, website accessibility has been a topic of discussion in the US. This conversation started around the increasing number of lawsuits over websites that don’t accommodate people with disabilities needing special accommodations. The ADA has provided standards that are relatively loose and not technical in nature.

When someone has an issue with a website’s accessibility and sends a demand letter, they almost unanimously use WCAG 2.1 compliance. This is why we have chosen to use this as the standard for this service, it provides a path of remediation and documented history of good faith operation that would reduce or eliminate any issues that may be brought up with litigious intent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Website accessibility isn’t just about your website. It is about everything on it, from photos, videos, and PDFs, in addition to the constantly changing content on the e-commerce stores that make up a bulk of our customers. While we alone can’t make your site accessible under WCAG 2.1 standards, we are launching this service to help people navigate a very complex space as easily as possible. We always want people to understand their part, what we can do to help and try to bridge the gap on what you need to keep track of as a business owner. This service fits perfectly in our long-term mission to make running an online store as easy as possible for anyone, allowing us to work with you to accomplish compliance and make sure your site remains compliant.

In the United States, there is no federal law that explicitly mandates specific technical standards for website accessibility for small businesses. However, the ADA provides guidelines that outline baseline requirements for website accessibility and clarify which entities those requirements apply to. (See ADA Guidelines)

As accessibility becomes a bigger focus, staying vigilant is one way to help avoid these risks while ensuring your website consistently focuses on ease of use and readability, which is good for all people using any website. Accessibility standards ensure that your site will conform to a uniform design language geared towards making your site easier to read, navigate, and use. This is well studied and is often believed to contribute a 1-2% increase in revenue, so it isn’t all doom and gloom; it is good for everyone, even your bottom line.

Under our Accessibility Service, we would fix between 1 to 3 issues per month, prioritizing the most critical issues first. Issues can range from simple, like adding alt text descriptions to images that were recently added to the website, to more complex, like making your product filters navigable with a keyboard or work with a screen reader.

When it comes to website accessibility, it’s not just the website itself that needs to be accessible; content like videos, PDFs, and other documents need to be accessible as well. While we can’t make these accessible for you, we can work with you to provide tips and references on how to make sure your content assets are accessible to all different kinds of users.
